The Toy Poodle is an extension of the well known poodle breed and is the smallest of all of the poodles. This is a very popular breed of dog, especially with those who have allergies because the poodle has a rare quality in that it is almost entirely hypoallergenic. The toy poodle breeders probably have this in mind when deciding what dogs to breed. This is one of their most well known features.
The Toy Poodle has, essentially, all of the same traits of the standard poodle, yet compact into a dog that ranges from 10-14 in(24-28 cm). Another term you may hear is a tiny teacup poodle, but this is simply a vanity name used in marketing the dogs and not recognized by official toy poodle breeders or any of the major kennel clubs. These versatile dogs have many talents. They are good in water because of their breeds history of being bred as a water dog. They are agile, flexible, intelligent and obedient, just to name a few characteristics. These qualities are probably what allowed then to win Best in show in 2002 at the Westminster Kennel Club show and also at the World Dog Show 2007.
As stated previously, one of the most sought after features of the toy poodle is their fur (sometimes referred to as hair because of the single layer and the texture) because it rarely sheds. The fur can range anywhere from coarse to super soft. Some is wavy and some is very curly. Many toy poodle breeders may also use its size as a bonus feature. Standard poodles are large and not good lap dogs. So if you are wanting a dog that is able to cuddle and be more easily transported then the toy poodle is your dog.
This popular breed is friendly and eager to please. They have been known to find trouble if they lack attention but that is easily rectified if given enough time and love. They also are extremely easy to train because of their intelligence. The toy poodle is a perfect little package in an adorable playful puppy.
